TRAINING DESIGN.

Cognitive Learning in Training and Certification for Occupational Bicycle Riding Yields Long-Term Results

THE CHALLENGE

  • Design a Training methodology to enhance the efficiency of a small community policing force to perform their duties safely the bicycles.

  • Incorporating bicycles into police patrols brings up several touch-points to be connected and challenges to be resolved. Selection, acquisition, operations and maintenance of hardware. Changes to officers’ mindsets with regard to safety and policing procedures on bicycles. All the way to basic riding competencies and enhanced cognition of intermediate riding skills.

  • To design a set of relevant metrics for assessment of the participants that will promote safety as well as engage participants' desire to put the learning into practice. â€‹

 CLIENT

The Home Team Academy is the training institute for various organisations of the Ministry of Home Affairs in Singapore, including the Singapore Police Force.

​

Sustainable occupational education over 5 years seeing more than 600 officers certified.

​

THE IMPACT

  • Deploying mixed action-based format in our training methodology to better engage the participants during the learning experience.

​

  • Comprehensive participant report to map out current competencies to enable participants to work on targeted areas of improvement.

​

  • Integrating occupational context for participants to help them understand the importance of safety and responsible use of vehicle during duty. 

​

  • Certified Police officers that are confident to be on patrol with bicycles, enabling them to cover more ground effectively. 

​

  • Through good design, we were able to future-proof the program, so that updates in syllabus or procedures would not entail expensive re-training of officers.
